API and Information Handling Services (IHS®) jointly launched the API Engineering Partnership program to make API standards more accessible to undergraduate and graduate petroleum engineering schools at select universities and colleges in North America.
The API Standards and Publishing program includes the publication of approximately 550 technical standards, presenting proven engineering and operating practices while promoting the use of safe and interchangeable equipment and materials that meet the standard specifications.
To enable the most widespread, practical and valuable use of API standards by students and faculty, the API Engineering Partnership is designed to provide universities with complimentary, Internet-accessible subscriptions to the complete collection of API standards. The donation of services provides a key component in educating future petroleum engineers about the practical uses of API standards in the global petroleum industry. The Engineering Partnership seeks to assist universities prepare a strong industry workforce for the future through the use of these standards.
The Engineering Partnership supports schools taking advantage of this freely available subscription product in meeting current accreditation criteria for the petroleum engineering curriculum, set by the Engineering Accreditation Commission, which requires incorporating engineering standards into the classroom curriculum. The subscription allows access to five users simultaneously, which should accommodate several hundred individual users. The retail value of the entire collection is $85,000. The annual subscription value of the entire collection being donated is $20,000.
Through the Engineering Partnership, API is also granting each participating school the printing and distribution rights to portions of the API standards to use as handouts for student use. Upon request, API also will grant students at recipient schools the right to include portions of API documents or entire API documents for the preparation of, and inclusion in, their theses or dissertation.
