In 1999, Marathon was one of the first companies to become a pioneer company in the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NRPA) Responsible Care Partnership Initiative, which focuses on improvement through implementation of key HES practices.
Marathon’s activities under the Responsible Care initiative in 2000 included sponsoring programs to meet each of the six Codes of Management Practice and sharing information with the public about the Responsible Care initiative.
Six of its seven refineries currently have active Community Advisory Panels (CAP) and the seventh refinery intends to establish a CAP in 2003. Each refinery has made presentations on the Responsible Care initiative to their Community Advisory Panels (CAP) and local civic organizations. Where necessary, CAPs have been reorganized to better fit the framework of Responsible Care. Marathon’s product terminals are sponsoring Responsible Care days to educate drivers and the surrounding public about the program. Similarly, Responsible Care displays have been prominent at several open houses held at Marathon refineries.
Marathon’s Garyville refinery continues to play an important personal role in promoting the quality of life in the local area. The Louisiana Refining Division and its employees contribute time and money for community enhancement through such activities as United Way, community emergency planning, hazardous waste collection, volunteer firefighting, local government administration, support of law enforcement, support of local education, promoting of vocational training, and through an overriding commitment to ethical business conduct.
