Addressing Community Needs

ConocoPhillips integrated sustainability into the project planning for a 2001 exploration appraisal project in the Orinoco Delta of Venezuela’s Gulf of Paria. The surrounding delta swamps are the homeland of the indigenous Warao peoples. And, the area is an environmentally sensitive dynamic delta system that includes shallow estuarine waters, tidal flats and mangrove swamps, which are vital spawning grounds for the fish and shrimp that support local commerce.

In addition to identifying operating processes that would protect the environmentally sensitive area, the planning included methods to build social capital through education and skill development programs, partnering with NGOs to provide bilingual intercultural health education for the Warao people; leadership and project formulation workshops for community associations and municipalities; education for fishermen on navigation and food preservation; and programs providing marketable skills for women, such as food preservation, sewing and hairdressing.
