Security has always been a top priority at oil and natural gas facilities.
In light of the horrific attacks of September 11th, the oil and natural gas industry is taking additional steps to secure their facilities and, in turn, enhance the security of surrounding communities. These include: increasing security at critical facilities worldwide; setting up communication networks to interface with government agencies on security related issues and information requests; promoting legislation to allow companies to share confidential information on security issues; supporting removal of facility specific information from government and other public web sites that could aid terrorists; and, working with the new Department of Homeland Security. As an example, the American Petroleum Institute is a supporting partner of the Energy Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Energy ISAC), a non-profit group that educates and helps protect members of the energy industry from threats to their facilities and operations. In addition, many API member companies maintain active community partnership programs aimed at planning, preparing and responding to local emergencies or natural disasters. For many years companies have entered into fire and emergency response training with local fire department and emergency response personnel.

Born of the desire to give back to the community, Devon Energy Corporation helped found Wise Eyes to assist local law enforcement in Wise County, Texas near Fort Worth. Being responsible for the transportation and treatment of the county’s natural gas reserves means having lots of employees on the county roads driving to and from job sites daily. Using their presence in the community as a resource, Devon employees are able to serve as extra eyes and ears in the community where law enforcement officers can’t always be.

Disaster can strike quickly and with little notice. From setting up emergency shelters to distributing food, Red Cross officials today trained volunteers, including ExxonMobil employees, as part of the Ready When the Time Comes program. If a large-scale disaster occurs, the Red Cross will call on partner corporations like ExxonMobil, which recruits the largest number of volunteers, to immediately mobilize the trained force to help those in need.

Serving as the industry representative on the U.S. Coast Guard’s Chemical Transportation Advisory Committee, a Marathon employee helped the group identify, review and make recommendations on industry standards for hazardous substance response organizations. The on-going initiative is headed by FEMA for the Office of Homeland Security. Recognizing his efforts, the Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard awarded the Marathon employee with the Meritorious Public Service Award.
