At Marathon's refineries, the on-site fire department trains with local fire departments that might be called to assist if a fire occurs. Marathon emphasizes fire-fighting training through employee attendance at industry-recognized facilities, such as Texas A&M. The refineries also sponsor local firefighter attendance at this training.
For more than 12 years, the Garyville, Louisiana, and Robinson, Illinois, refineries have provided emergency response training to their respective local volunteer fire departments, as well as to members of local public agencies, including the State Police Hazmat Team and Office of Civil Defense. The two refineries also are STAR participants in OSHA’s Voluntary Protection Program. St. Paul Park has applied for Minnesota OSHA VPP and MNSTAR programs and the Detroit refinery was recently received the MIOSHA Michigan Voluntary Protection Program Rising Star Award for workplace safety and health. Exemplary safety performance is a direct result of employee awareness and refinery safety process implementation. STAR participants are the best safety and health performers in the United States. Only 745 facilities in the United States have been accepted into this elite program.
Marathon’s Texas City, Texas, refinery’s 50-person Volunteer Fire Department regularly trains at the Texas A&M Fire School in industrial firefighting, hazardous materials, and confined space/high angle rescue. The refinery is a member of the Texas City Industrial Mutual Aid System (IMAS) and employees in the refinery's Security & Emergency Preparedness Group serve in leadership positions in the IMAS organization. In addition, the refinery's fire department is a member of the Galveston County Firefighters Association and the refinery participates in the Galveston County Local Emergency Planning Committee.
The Catlettsburg, Kentucky, refinery’s 50 member, all volunteer, Fire and Rescue team responds to refinery emergencies. It also provides Mutual Aid to the local communities when requested. The refinery’s fire chief is a member of the Local Emergency Planning Commission and the refinery conducts periodic drills with local organizations and hospitals.
