ExxonMobil supports mathematics programs such as the K-5 Mathematics Specialist Program that emphasizes improving mathematics learning among students and teachers. It is guided by a belief that student learning improves when teachers have a competent grasp of content, teaching methodologies and thoughtful assessment practices.
The role of the mathematics specialist in achieving these goals is central to the program. Since 1988, about 350 grants have gone to over 120 school districts. A specialist provides leadership for high quality professional development for teachers and administrators, works side by side with classroom teachers in developing effective, student-centered teaching that is built around the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics principles and standards and well-researched theories of learning.
