BP is providing sponsorship to the Nature Conservancy to support research and a conservation and recovery programme for the island fox.

Biodiversity and Environmental Education in South Carolina, USA
BP’s Cooper River plant in South Carolina has a large area of land under its stewardship, much of it rich in biodiversity. After Hurricane Hugo destroyed much of the forest in 1989, BP increased its efforts to restore and enhance the site’s forest and wildlife resources.

Helping to Protect the Iberian Lynx in Spain
BP in Spain is working with the Global Nature Fund, (a private, non-profit foundation dedicated to protecting the environment), to support the needs of the lynx. With the advice of the Worldwide Fund for Nature, BP is also helping to restore lynx habitat in southwestern Spain operating with the NGOs Fundación Doñana and Estación Biológica de Doñana.

Getting Back to Nature in Trinidad
When local employees realized that a peninsula of land at BP’s Galeota Point terminal on the southeastern tip of Trinidad was going to waste as an obsolete machinery store, they decided it was time they did something about it. The Galeota promontory had once been a stopping-off point for many bird species on migratory routes across the Caribbean, and the team determined to try and restore the land as a bird sanctuary.

Helping Turtles Find Sanctuary at Ma'Dareah, Malaysia
Marine turtles are some of the ocean’s most magnificent creatures, but their survival is threatened by egg collecting, fishing practices, shoreline development, loss of habitat, marine pollution, and by being hunted for their shells and meat. Many conservation efforts have focused on establishing turtle sanctuaries where eggs can be collected and safely hatched. The Ma’ Daerah model is a unique achievement. It is the first sanctuary initiated in partnership between the Department of Fisheries, WWF Malaysia and BP.

BP Solar has been working with the Peabody Trust, a charity that provides social housing for those on low incomes, to transform a brown field site – the location of a former sewage works in London – into a housing development with a difference, BedZED.

Supporting the Climate Action Project in Bolivia
With the rainforests of South America under ever-increasing threat from unsustainable logging and land conversion practices, BP has joined forces with other companies, a local co-coordinating agency, and the Bolivian government to administer the Noel Kempff Mercado Climate Action Project in Bolivia. With the aim of contributing to mitigation of global climate change, the Climate Action Project (CAP) is the largest forest-based carbon project in the world.

Cleaning Up the Seas off Alaska
Alaska Clean Seas (ACS) is the spill response cooperative for the oil companies that operate on the North Slope of Alaska. BP's exploration and production business is a member, providing financial and technical support for ACS. The cooperative is the main response organization BP relies on for any oil spills at our North Slope operations.

BP Solar Donates Solar Equipment for Hometown Earth and Space Science Laboratory
BP Solar has made a donation of 160 solar modules, supporting equipment, and technical expertise to Frederick County Public Schools' (FCPS) new facility for its Earth and Space Science Laboratory (ESSL). The donation is valued at more than $100,000.

BP Launches A+ for Energy to California Teachers
Building on last year's first-ever and highly successful A+ for Energy grant program, BP, a global energy provider, announced the launch of the 2005 A+ for Energy program. The 2005 A+ for Energy grant program awards $2 million in grants and scholarships to California K-12 teachers to implement creative and innovative educational programs to teach students about energy and energy conservation.

Collaboration will focus on new technologies for studying the marine environment

HIV/AIDS In Southern Africa
In 2002 HIV infections and AIDS-related deaths in sub-Saharan Africa continued to rise. BP is also supporting external HIV/AIDS awareness-raising and education programmes in partnership with government, NGOs, trade unions and other businesses.

Helmets for Kids: Road Safety in Vietnam
Vietnam saw some 13,000 road fatalities in 2002, representing around 37 deaths per day – a rate that’s eight times higher than in the UK. In conjunction with the Asia Injury Prevention Foundation, BP has helped establish a plant in the Vietnamese capital Hanoi, which produces high-quality helmets specially designed for use in tropical conditions.  Profits from the sale of helmets to adult riders helps free helmets for children.

Promoting Driving Safety through Active Partnerships
Over one million people die as a result of road accidents every year, with 80% of these deaths occurring in developing countries. The World Health Organization (WHO) expects road accidents to be the third highest cause of death by 2020. In 2003 BP participated in a number of initiatives designed to highlight driving safety issues or promote safety standards – working in partnership with other businesses, local community organizations and government agencies.

Community Clean-up, Environmental Protection and Volunteer Programs

Land Restoration/Llandarcy, Wales
Llandarcy refinery in Wales, UK is a 400-hectare site that closed in 1998 after 75 years operation. BP’s restoration of the former refinery site involves the removal of hydrocarbon wastes from large areas and there have been several initiatives to replace many of the refinery's lost jobs, creating conditions for new employment opportunities.

Working with the municipality of Texas City, in the USA, BP has helped to create a valuable natural and community resource for local residents – setting a benchmark for successful community and corporate partnership in the process.

Resettlement at Tanah Merah, Tangguh, Indonesia
We are using the World Bank’s Impoverishment Risk and Livelihood Restoration (IRLR) Model as a planning matrix, to analyze poverty risks and formulate strategies to overcome them. An Advisory Panel provides the project with detailed advice and assistance in programme planning. The Panel is also engaged in an oversight and assurance role throughout the resettlement implementation phase.

Local Recruitment in Angola
BP is now only a few months away from planned sanction of the Greater Plutonio project, a deep-water development off the coast of Angola in Africa. Oil production from Greater Plutonio is expected to start by early 2007.

Building Homes in Durban, South Africa
Working long hours, but under trained supervision, our employees toiled hard for a week to help build houses for the homeless in Cato Manor, Durban. Habitat for Humanity International is a non-profit organisation whose aim is to eliminate substandard housing and homelessness from the world.

Building Community Links in Colombia
People living in and around Morcote have traditionally felt isolated from regional and national government and their daily lives are threatened by intermittent guerilla activity. BP has taken steps to help them, by establishing an innovative tri-sector partnership for the construction of a 22km road link between Morcote and the town of Nunchia.

Commitment to Voluntary Principles in Algeria
BP in Algeria currently operates three major upstream projects in partnership with the Algerian national oil company Sonatrach. Within this context, the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights provide guidance for the Algeria Business Unit on maintaining the safety of its operations within an operating framework that ensures respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Applying Voluntary Principles in Colombia
BP has been operating in Colombia since 1987. Our core business is the exploration and production of oil and gas, with major activity in the Cusiana and Cupiagua complex, located in the eastern province of Casanare, 200 kilometres from Bogota. BP operated fields currently produce a total of 240,000 barrels a day and account for 40% of Colombia’s total crude oil production.

Indonesia is one of the world's most challenging places in which to conduct business. BP Indonesia has been operating a local ethics governance board since 2000 when the scale of our business was increased considerably following the purchase of Arco. Significant effort has been made to ensure that staff understand BP’s Ethical Policies and the changes made in 2002.

Headlines on Colombia often feature the internal conflict between the State and several outlaw groups which has been raging for over 40 years. They also focus on the issues of drug production and trafficking, violent street crime, kidnappings and human rights abuses. It is in this environment that the Colombian government and others are working to strengthen the rule of law and all aspects of the judicial system.
