Partnership for Cleaner Fuels
In June 1999, Petro-Canada, Ballard Power Systems and Methanex Corporation announced the signing of a memorandum of understanding to work together to prepare for the establishment of a commercially viable fuel distribution network to meet the expected market demand for fuel cell vehicles. Ballard Power's proton exchange membrane fuel cell converts energy from a fuel source into electricity, without combustion.

Environmental Clean-up, Recycling and Restoration Programs

Recycling Used Motor Oil in Canada
Petro-Canada participates in the industry-sponsored effort to improve the collection and recycling of used motor oil from automobiles and commercial sources. All used motor oil that is changed at Petro-Canada facilities is recycled.

Inglewood Wildlands
The Inglewood Wildlands was acquired by Petro-Canada in 1985. A former Gulf Oil refinery, the Wildlands began as an extensive environmental clean-up project in order to protect the Bow river and surrounding habitats and has since grown into a river valley mosaic of grasslands, shrubs, and riparian woods.

“The Job Begins at Home”
Petro-Canada is the exclusive oil and gas industry sponsor of the ’Climate Change Action – “the Job Begins at Home” program, created and delivered by the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador. The program is aimed at educating and inspiring residents of Newfoundland and Labrador to take action to reduce home and personal greenhouse gas emissions.

Educating for Conservation in Canada
Petro-Canada has partnered with Destination Conservation to sponsor the delivery of this conservation initiative in British Columbia, Alberta and Quebec. Destination Conservation is a practical, student-driven, activity-based program bringing conservation alive within schools from kindergarten to Grade 12.

Petro-Canada Bird School
An extension of the Petro-Canada Bird School at the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary in Calgary, Bird School Branches Out is a community outreach program that creates special outdoor learning sites at local schools. Students and program partners work together to plant interactive gardens, attracting a wide variety of local bird life that the students can observe, learn about, and enjoy.

Community Engagement and Health Programs

Operating in Your Neighborhood Program in Canada
Gain a better understanding of what local residents wanted to know about the company's upstream operations. These findings helped shaped Petro-Canada's Operating in Your Neighborhood program, which is intended to provide all of Petro-Canada's drilling and gas plant neighbors with easy-to-understand information about its activities and environment, health and safety precautions.

Community Advisory Committee in Canada
The volunteer-led Community Advisory Committee (CAC) to Petro-Canada’s Oakville Refinery in Ontario was formed in 1991 to work with the refinery to reduce environmental impacts on the community.

Since September 1997, Petro-Canada’s Montreal refinery has been involved in an environmental management and co-operation project with the Quebec Ministry of the Environment and the Montreal Urban Community’s Environment Department.

In 2000, Petro-Canada launched Petro-Points for Cancer program which gives its Petro-Points customers the opportunity to donate their points (in increments of 5,000) to the Cancer Information Service (CIS).

Update! Calgary Interfaith Food Bank
The Calgary Interfaith Food Bank depends on donations to distribute food hampers across the city. Hampers contain a week’s worth of groceries and are delivered primarily to the “working poor.” Hampers also exist for emergencies, the homeless, and households with babies.  For over 20 years, Petro-Canada employees and retirees have volunteered their time to this fundraiser.

Petro-Canada and the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development partnered to create Alberta Ecotrust in 1991. Alberta Ecotrust supports sound and effective community-based environmental action.

Promoting Volunteerism
Under the banner of its Volunteer Energy Program, Petro-Canada has created initiatives that recognize the value of employee and retiree volunteerism and encourage involvement. This program was created to support the efforts of Petro-Canada employees and retirees and recognizes their personal choices to be involved in their communities.
