Conservation and Wildlife Habitat (Biodiversity) Protection
Shell Marine Habitat Program
In 1998 the Shell Oil Company Foundation and the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation announced at a special ceremony the single largest corporate donation ever made in support of marine conservation. Shell's unprecedented $5 million gift over five years has been used by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation to create a conservation fund called the Shell Marine Habitat Program that will support projects to conserve, protect and enhance the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem.

Flower Valley and the Cape Floral Kingdom
The goals of the Flower Valley project are to conserve the biodiversity of the lowland fynbos; to generate livelihoods in an area of high unemployment through sustainable harvesting of the fynbos flowers and associated micro-enterprises, such as paper-making; and to improve the quality of life of farm workers and their families through the provision of education and health services.

Working Together for Biodiversity
Shell and the Smithsonian Institution (SI) signed a five-year Memorandum of Understanding in June 2000, under which the SI is assessing the impact of Shell operations on areas of high biodiversity value. The first joint project in the Gamba complex in Gabon follows extensive national and international consultation including feedback from a stakeholder workshop.

Shell Opens First Cluster of Hydrogen Filling Stations
On July 14, 2009, Shell opened its second hydrogen filling station in the greater New York City area, with a third opening in the area shortly after that. The original station had already been operating there for more than a year, making this Shell’s first cluster of hydrogen filling stations.

Cleaner Fuels
In January 2002, Shell launched a new semi-synthetic diesel fuel – Shell Pura – in Thailand. Shell Pura is the first diesel formulated to take advantage of the ultra-clean properties of a liquid fuel made from natural gas using the Shell Middle Distillate Synthesis (SMDS) process.

Community Engagement and Health Programs
Addressing HIV/AIDS
Across Sub-Saharan Africa we run AIDS prevention and care programmes for our employees and their families using our retail outlets to raise public awareness. We will be adopting a global HIV/AIDS Standard. In January 2002, in partnership with Population Services International (PSI) and other NGOs, Shell Côte d’Ivoire opened the Shell Institute to carry out HIV prevention in Yamassoukrou, the Ivory Coast’s political capital.

Beach Cleanup
Shell is one of the largest worldwide participants in The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. Working in conjunction with The Texas General Land Office's Adopt-a-Beach program, The Ocean Conservancy's objective is to remove trash from beaches while also collecting valuable information on the amount and type of debris.

Shell Center for Sustainability
The Shell Oil Company Foundation announced the establishment of the Shell Center for Sustainability at Rice University in Houston. The Center with a $3.5 million endowment, announced in July 2002, will be a hub for collaboration by experts dealing with societal and environmental issues arising as a result of economic activities. The Center will foster opportunities for improvement through new technologies, market-based incentives, and other initiatives.

Effective Partnerships for Self-Development
Shell has operated in the Gamba region in Gabon for nearly 40 years, but oil activities are declining. Today, a quarter of the local population of Gamba, about 2,000 people, are dependent on Shell for basic social amenities such as education and sea transportation (for food and other materials).

Community Development
In 2000, Shell commenced an external stakeholder review of its community projects. The review, which is now conducted annually, provides independent advice and verification from external development experts, such as the World Bank, UNICEF, Pro-Natura and Nigerian Government agencies to help the company improve its community development performance.

Solar Electricity Systems
Two billion people worldwide, living mostly in poor and remote rural areas, have no access to electricity. Shell Solar is bringing solar electricity and equipment directly to remote households, on commercial terms in six developing countries.

Nanhai Petrochemicals Project
A joint venture between Shell, China National Offshore Oil Corporation and Guangdong provincial government is investing $4 billion in a major petrochemicals complex in Daya Bay, Guangdong Province, Southern China. By late 2005, the plant will be producing more than two million tonnes of plastics and chemical intermediates each year for China’s growing economy. The challenge is to develop the project while protecting the environment and creating real benefits for local communities.

Building Local Capacity
Shell Canada is developing the Athabasca Oil Sands Project – a joint venture set to boost the GDP of the province of Alberta by C$2 billion in 2002. The company is helping build the community’s capacity to supply business services so that locals can benefit from the economic development. Training initiatives include the Aboriginal Apprenticeship Programme, devised to increase the participation of aboriginal people in high-demand trades.

Support for Youth Enterprise
Shell LiveWIRE provides much needed advice and support for young people going into business. LiveWIRE programmes are currently operating in seventeen countries, offering access to business advice for young entrepreneurs and award schemes in each country.

Micro-Enterprise Development for Women
In May 2001 the Shell Foundation, through its worldwide Sustainable Communities Programme, approved a grant of $330,000 to the Integra Foundation, a not-for-profit group providing support to poor women in Slovakia and Romania.
