WASHINGTON, October 16, 2006 – API has elected Rex W. Tillerson, chairman and chief executive officer of ExxonMobil, as chairman of its board, effective January 1, 2007. Larry Nichols, chairman and chief executive officer of Devon Energy, has been elected as API’s treasurer, also effective January 1, and Marathon President and CEO Clarence Cazalot Jr. has been elected chairman of API's audit committee. The announcement was made at API’s annual meeting.
As chairman of API’s Board of Directors, Tillerson will also chair the trade association’s 25-member Policy Committee and 10-member Executive Committee.
Tillerson assumed his current position on January 1, 2006. He was elected president of ExxonMobil and member of the board of directors on March 1, 2004. A native of Wichita Falls, Texas, Tillerson earned a bachelor of science degree in civil engineering ay the University of Texas at Austin before joining Exxon Company, U.S.A. in 1975.
Nichols is a co-founder of Devon and was named chairman of the board of directors of the company in 2000. Nichols served as president of Devon from 1976 until 2003 and has served as chief executive officer since 1980.
Nichols was awarded a bachelor of science degree in geology from Princeton University and a law degree from the University of Michigan.
Cazalot joined Marathon in March 2000. Prior to this move, he had served since 1999 as vice president of Texaco Inc. and president of Texaco's worldwide production operations.
He is a native of New Orleans and graduated from Louisiana State University with a bachelor of science degree in geology.
Washington-based API, the national trade association of the U.S. oil and natural gas industry, has approximately 400 members.
