API statement on Exxon Mobil Corp's Energy Outlook

WASHINGTON, December 8, 2009 – The American Petroleum Institute issued the following statement today from its President and CEO Jack Gerard on findings of Exxon Mobil Corporation’s Outlook for Energy: View to 2030:

“The energy outlook issued today by Exxon Mobil Corporation underscores the pressing need to do all we can to develop all economic fuel sources, including America’s own oil and natural gas resources. As the outlook shows, the world will still rely on oil and natural gas to meet much of its energy demand for years to come even with big gains in energy efficiency and alternative energy production. The U.S. oil and natural gas industry stands ready and able to put our skilled employees and state-of-the-art technology to good use developing America’s energy resources for the benefit of consumers, strengthening our nation’s economy and energy security and providing good jobs for Americans.

“The outlook also underlines the growing importance of clean-burning natural gas. It notes that ‘imposing higher costs for carbon emissions would impact energy prices and provide an incentive to switch’ to natural gas and other less-carbon intensive fuels to meet electricity demand. Natural gas development is a true American success story. Technological developments have enabled the industry to significantly increase U.S. natural gas production and reserves over the past few years and create thousands of new American jobs. Policymakers should do everything they can to foster this development.“
