API statement on the House Energy Committee’s proposal to investigate hydraulic fracturing

WASHINGTON, February 18, 2010 – The American Petroleum Institute issued the following statement today regarding the House Energy Committee’s proposal to investigate hydraulic fracturing:

"Hydraulic fracturing is a safe technology critical to developing the nation’s vast natural gas reserves. It has been used for more than 60 years in more than one million U.S. wells without a single confirmed instance of groundwater contamination. The director of EPA’s Drinking Water Protection Division recently stated that he hadn’t seen any documented cases of contamination as a result of hydraulic fracturing. States have regulated the technology for decades with every incentive to ensure it is employed safely."
