API: Obama should take the lead on Keystone XL

WASHINGTON, June 28, 2012 ─ API President and CEO Jack Gerard called on President Obama to immediately approve the Keystone XL pipeline and put thousands of Americans to work.

“It’s unfortunate that we missed another opportunity to expedite the building of Keystone XL,” said Gerard. “We appreciate the efforts of KXL supporters on the Hill for continuing to highlight this shovel ready project. Congress has taken the lead on Keystone because the president continues to stand in the way. He should have approved this pipeline last year. Keystone has now been exhaustively reviewed for more than four years.

“It’s mind boggling why the president continues to hold KXL hostage,” Gerard said. “Americans going to the polls this fall will remember that President Obama denied a project that would better our economy and energy future.”

API represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America's energy, supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers more than $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested more than $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.
