WASHINGTON – After posting a 22 percent first-quarter decline relative to 2009, U.S. oil and natural gas drilling activity staged a turnaround in the second quarter, with completions rising 38 percent from 2009’s second quarter, according to API’s 2010 Quarterly Well Completion Report: Second Quarter.

WASHINGTON, July 15, 2010 — The House Energy and Commerce’s Blowout Prevention Act (HR 5626), which was marked up today, remains problematic despite constructive bipartisan efforts to improve the legislation, according to a statement by American Petroleum Institute President and CEO Jack Gerard:

WASHINGTON, July 12 –The Interior Department’s new moratorium on deepwater drilling is not necessary for safety and will cost jobs, harm the Gulf region and weaken our nation’s energy security.  API’s President and CEO Jack Gerard offered this reaction to the new policy:

WASHINGTON, July 12 – API called for an early return to deepwater Gulf drilling in testimony delivered in New Orleans today at the first meeting of the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling.  API senior policy advisor Andy Radford told the commission, “we must work to get the Gulf deepwater industry – and the tens of thousands of people it employs – fully up and running again with as little delay as possible.”

WASHINGTON, July 8, 2010 – In a statement prepared for today's U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Hydraulic Fracturing Informational Meeting, API Upstream Senior Policy Advisor Stephanie Meadows said the oil and natural gas industry is “confident that a comprehensive review will confirm what 60 years of experience and investigation have demonstrated -- that the sound application of this technology, following well recognized risk-based decision making principles poses no significant risk to human health, drinking water resources, or the environment.” Ms. Meadows added that the oil and natural gas industry looks forward to providing constructive input throughout the stakeholder process and stand ready to offer our expertise to the Agency as the study progresses.

WASHINGTON, July 8, 2010 – The American Petroleum Institute urged the U.S. Court of Appeals to uphold Judge Feldman’s decision to stay the federal moratorium on deepwater offshore drilling.

WASHINGTON, D.C., July 2 – With Congress expected to consider energy legislation this summer, some are suggesting that any new programs be paid for with new taxes on the oil and natural gas industry.  As the nation struggles to recover from recession, further taxes on an industry that supports 9.2 million jobs and 7.5 percent of our GDP could have a devastating effect on our jobs, economic recovery and our energy security, according to the leading oil and natural gas trade association.
