A special thanks to U.S. Rep. Gene Green of Texas, who shared some thoughts about energy production associated with his Houston-area district, as well as an update on recovery efforts there after Hurricane Harvey, during an API Hill communicators event on Wednesday. ... Green described some of Hurricane Harvey’s impacts, and API President and CEO Jack Gerard, who hosted the event, said lots of Americans have the Texas-Louisiana Gulf Coast and Florida in their thoughts after Harvey and Irma. Gerard said the storms’ impacts help underscore the essential quality of accessible, reliable energy.

Oil and Gas Investor: The technology that fueled the U.S. shale revolution could breathe new life into old oil fields outside of North America.
More than 170 mature oil plays worldwide have the potential from horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing to produce as much as 141 billion barrels (Bbbl) of oil, according to an IHS report on May 13.
Of the estimated 141 Bbbl of potentially recoverable oil using unconventional techniques, 135 Bbbl exist in plays that would likely require hydraulic fracture stimulation to produce. Roughly 6 Bbbl sit in plays that may not require hydraulic fracturing.

A few of the new good-news stories resulting from America’s oil and natural gas revolution:
Investing in Ohio Production …
The state’s geologist says Utica shale development has triggered $20 billion to $24 billion in spending investments and more will come, reports the Akron Beacon Journal’s online edition. The newspaper cites an unreleased report by Ohio state geologist Mike McCormac that says drilling companies have spent about $6 billion on drilling plus approximately $2 billion on leases. Investments in processing plants and pipelines are estimated at $12 billion to $16 billion.

Guest Editorial: Keystone Pipeline System Operating for Years
Sun Advocate: Here's a little-known fact: The Keystone pipeline system has been transporting oil sands from Canada to U.S. refineries in the Midwest for three years -- with no major leaks and, more importantly, no major complaints from environmentalists. …
The fact is that the Keystone XL pipeline is simply an extension of an already existing program that is working well, creating jobs and expanding U.S. manufacturing. It should be an easy, and quick, decision for any president concerned about the economy.

Thanks, shale and hydraulic fracturing!
Two news items prompt today’s gratitude. First, a new study of Texas’ Eagle Ford shale play shows the dramatic economic lift being provided by oil and natural gas development. Second, a Reuters article underscores the point that affordable natural gas – again, thanks to fracking and shale – is spurring a U.S. manufacturing renaissance – in this case, attracting investment in this country from foreign companies.
The Eagle Ford study by the University of Texas at San Antonio has these numbers:
