Like other states along the Atlantic coast, Florida could see substantial economic benefits from safe offshore oil and natural gas development – if Washington will allow it. That’s a big “if.” A draft oil and natural gas leasing program – the subject of a scheduled public hearing today in Jacksonville – provides for just one lease sale in the Atlantic and not until 2021, almost at the end of a plan that covers the 2017 to 2022 time period. That could leave Florida and other states on the outside looking in at the benefits of offshore development.

In a Tallahassee Democrat op-ed published this week, the Florida Petroleum Council's Dave Mica challenges recent inaccurate claims that oil and natural gas jobs are declining and production off Florida's coast will harm the tourism industry.

Offshore drilling will be on the agenda when Florida's annual legislative session begins tomorrow. No legislation has been introduced yet, but AP reports that resolutions have been introduced to lift drilling bans in federal waters near Florida's coastline.

Walton Sun (Florida) op-ed, authored by geoscientist Al Swiercz and published last week, discussed the benefits of offshore drilling for Florida residents and the United States. Swiercz said that exploration would "not only protect the beauty of our beaches, but allow us to reap the benefits of offshore exploration," including tax revenues, jobs--including "blue-collar" rig jobs which pay upwards of $75,000 per year--and great fishing areas around offshore platforms.
