An interesting read in the Wall Street Journal underscores what we’ve been saying about the nation’s need for more energy infrastructure: Basically, that despite record natural gas production, Americans in some parts of the country aren’t benefiting from it as much as they should. The Journal:
U.S. gas production rose to a record of more than 37 trillion cubic feet last year, up 44% from a decade earlier. Yet the infrastructure needed to move gas around the country hasn’t kept up. … The result, despite natural-gas prices that look low on commodities exchanges, is energy feast and famine.

For a number of months we’ve been talking about the need for more efficient and predictable federal processes for the permitting of energy infrastructure – including new natural gas pipelines and added capacity. New, bipartisan legislation introduced this week in the U.S. Senate is latest move in that direction.

Access and infrastructure expansion – both key to extending the benefits of America’s energy renaissance to more Americans – are getting helpful attention from state utilities regulators. The National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) last month set up a task force to develop best practices and recommendations on natural gas service for underserved and unserved parts of the country – which includes the need for pipelines and other supporting infrastructure.

Reducing government regulation found its way into a number of the speeches at the Republican Convention in Cleveland, and this is especially important to the future of America’s energy renaissance.
Along with cutting government red tape in leasing and permitting of energy projects, establishing a common-sense approach to energy regulation will help encourage the private investment and innovation that are driving the surge in domestic oil and natural gas production.
More on that below. First, remember that as the U.S. continues to lead the world in oil and gas production, we’ve seen economic benefits, cost savings for consumers, lower crude oil imports that have helped make America more energy secure and carbon emissions reductions that lead the globe.

It’s clear in a new Harris Poll on energy issues that Americans recognize the revolutionary opportunity that’s being afforded the United States by increased domestic energy production – consumer benefits, economic growth and increased security.
The poll’s registered voters see a new U.S. energy narrative, one of abundance that’s making America more self-reliant and stronger. Even more, those surveyed appreciate the fact that American-made energy is a path to future prosperity, and they want policies that help ensure that path is taken.
