The Interior Department's plan to complete supplemental environmental reviews could prevent the U.S. government from holding a Gulf of Mexico lease sale next year, making 2011 the first year since 1965 that no Gulf leases would be sold for U.S. offshore oil production.

Brazil says its deepwater Libra oil field could hold as much as 15 billion barrels of oil, making it the biggest crude oil discovery in the Americas since Mexico discovered the Cantarell field in 1976.

U.S. oil and natural gas drilling increased markedly in the third quarter this year, according to API's 2010 Quarterly Well Completion Report: Third Quarter. An estimated 11,297 oil wells, natural gas wells and dry holes were completed, which was 45 percent higher than during the same period in 2009.

China has overtaken the United States as the world's largest energy consumer, according to the International Energy Agency (IEA). The executive director of the IEA Nobuo Tanaka said last week, "Probably half of the oil demand increase comes from China." (Reuters)

After a months-long investigation, the Department of the Interior made the right decision and ended the deepwater drilling moratorium. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar said it was "appropriate" to end the ban because safety measures have been strengthened and spill response capabilities have been improved.
