BP reinstalled the cap on the blowout preventer (BOP) at the leaking Macondo well last evening, and it began capturing oil and gas a short time later. Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen says the amount of oil being collected could rise to about 53,000 barrels a day after a third containment device arrives next Tuesday.

While oil company officials were being questioned by Congress today, a bolt of lightning started a small fire on the Discoverer Enterprise, the drillship that is collecting oil and flaring gas from the leaking Macondo well.

Early in the hearing, they expressed their heartfelt concern for the 11 men who lost their lives in the Deepwater Horizon tragedy and some briefly described their companies' safety procedures.
