Yesterday author, lawyer and blogger Byron King sent me a copy of an article, published in Outstanding Investments newsletter, expressing his thoughts on the tragic loss of the Deepwater Horizon drilling rig. Byron writes that the accident "is hitting home" with him. He recently visited a drillship owned by Transocean, which is the same company that owns and operated the rig that caught fire and sank in the Gulf of Mexico. What he learned apparently gave him a profound sense of respect for the crew.

It's time to add some common sense to the debate over offshore energy development. The benefits are obvious: More domestic energy, more jobs, a much needed boost to the economy without depending on government spending, improved U.S. energy security, and fewer U.S. dollars being sent overseas to purchase oil from other countries. At a time when the unemployment rate continues to hover just below 10 percent and American families are worried about their futures, now is the time to open more areas to energy development.

Yesterday, Chevron U.S.A. Inc. announced that the Discoverer Clear Leader--an ultra-deepwater drillship newly built to Chevron's specifications--has begun work in the deepwater U.S. Gulf of Mexico, allowing Chevron to expand its search for new domestic sources of energy.

The greatest "new" energy source available today is the reduced demand brought about by greater energy efficiency. It's the cleanest, quickest and most cost-effective way to extend today's energy supply into the future. It's wise to practice energy efficiency, and the oil and natural gas industry is doing its part.
