Natural gas and oil touch nearly every aspect of life in Colorado – with responsible, well-regulated development that protects the environment and public health creating jobs and opportunity while providing significant support for public services, including the state’s education system. That’s broad message contained in a new report, “Progress and Opportunity,” just released by API.

During recent visits to three universities, my goal was to have conversations with students who might be part of the next generation of the energy workforce – talking with them about energy, global markets, the potential for rewarding careers and the advanced technologies we use to safely and responsibly develop the energy our country needs to grow its economy and increase its security.
I visited with 110 graduate and undergraduate students at the University of Pennsylvania, Tulane (photo below) and Rice universities – many of whom hope to work in the energy industry, and others who recognize the ways energy affects careers in manufacturing, finance, trading and other fields.

Men and women who’ve worn the uniform of the United States view “energy security” through a different lens than the rest of us. To many of them the American energy revolution – with oil production projected to reach 10.7 million barrels per day this year, and the U.S. becoming a net natural gas exporter for the first time in nearly 60 years – means our armed forces are less likely to be deployed to faraway places to protect energy interests. The point was underscored at a Vets4Energy event today at API.

Women continue to advance in the natural gas and oil industry. Yes, there’s more progress to be made – and it will be made – yet, it’s clear the old narrative that our industry remains the realm of men is just so yesterday – yesteryear, really.
This week Royal Dutch Shell announced former Maersk Oil CEO Gretchen Watkins will become president of its North American operations. Last week, Susan Dio was named chairwoman and president of BP America. There are other recent examples, including Julie Robertson, president and CEO of Noble Corporation and Vicki Hollub, president and CEO of Occidental Petroleum.

In the natural gas and oil industry, measuring opportunity starts with 10.3 million – the number of jobs our industry supports. Because a job is economic livelihood for individual Americans and their households. They’re the avenue to something better.

Soon, the Interior Department is expected to release its draft offshore leasing program that will shape natural gas and oil development on the federal outer continental shelf (OCS) for the next five years, 2019-2024. Recognizing that the leasing program only outlines where lease auctions could be conducted, let’s take a look at some offshore basics to provide full context to a process that’s critically important to our country’s future energy security.

The health of African American communities is a genuine cause for concern in our country. But attacking our industry is the wrong approach and detracts from the real work that should be done to reduce disparately high rates of disease among African Americans. Industry is committed to the health and safety of the communities where it operates and to its workers, leading the way on reducing U.S. greenhouse gas and other air emissions and supporting millions of well-paying jobs – one of the most important factors in Americans’ well-being.I’ve read an NAACP paper released this week that accuses the natural gas and oil industry of emissions that disproportionately burden African American communities. As a scientist, my overall observation is that the paper fails to demonstrate a causal relationship between natural gas activity and the health disparities, reported or predicted, within the African American community. Rather, scholarly research attributes those health disparities to other factors that have nothing to do with natural gas and oil operations – such as genetics, indoor allergens and unequal access to preventative care.
