There's a photo of a large gasoline-price sign making the rounds on the Internet this week. Instead of listing the retail prices, it advertises the pump price of regular gas as "LOL"; the price of midgrade is listed as "OMG"; and premium is "WTF." Although some might say the photo is amusing, for those on a limited budget, the rapid climb in the price of gasoline is alarming.

The nationwide average price of gasoline remained steady at $3.095 a gallon yesterday, according to AAA. As we've reported here many times, the cost of crude oil is the largest factor in the price of gasoline, but excise taxes also account for a large percentage of the pump price.

Gasoline prices rose to their highest level in the past two years yesterday. According to AAA, the average price of gasoline climbed one penny Dec. 29 to $3.071 per gallon. This is the highest level since October 15, 2008, when the average price of gasoline reached $3.084.

Americans will take to the roads in record numbers this holiday season. AAA projects that travel will rise by 3.1 percent to 92.3 million during the Dec. 23-Jan. 2 holiday period. Last year travel increased by 4.4 percent, making the 2009-2010 and 2010-2011 holiday seasons the first back-to-back increases since 2005-2006 and 2006-2007.

Crude oil prices reached a two-year high on Friday. At the end of the trading day, it closed at $89.19 per barrel, up nearly 21 cents a gallon since November 17.
