There’s great opportunity to responsibly develop Alaska’s great oil and natural gas resources. This should be guided by a forward-thinking regulatory framework that prioritizes regularly scheduled lease sales as necessary to enhance U.S. energy security and maintain America’s position as a global energy superpower.

The great point here is the connectivity between different sectors of a modern economy and the importance of consistent growth, particularly for our industry. For the country, finding and developing the oil and natural gas that’s involved with virtually every aspect of modern living is key to future economic growth, energy security and security overall.

We need to change our course on energy – in offshore policy and other areas – to benefit American consumers, U.S. businesses, our economy and the country’s energy security. Given the fact it takes years to realize the benefits of offshore energy development, the administration’s decision to shelve much of America’s offshore potential is devastatingly shortsighted, bordering on the irresponsible, in the face of projected increasing global demand for oil and natural gas.

With a series of public hearings on proposed federal rules for offshore seismic testing scheduled to begin this week, let’s take a look at the basics on the safe technologies and procedures used to survey for oil and natural gas reserves. These are key as the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) conducts hearings in New Orleans (Nov. 9), Gulfport, Miss. (Nov. 10), Fort Walton Beach, Fla. (Nov. 14), Mobile, Ala. (Nov. 15) and Houston (Nov. 17).

Safe offshore energy development is a by-product of advanced technologies and equipment, an ever-expanding knowledge base, improved worker training, an effective partnership of industry and regulatory authorities, constantly improving standards for deepwater exploration and production and, over it all, an industry committed to creating and growing a culture of safety in offshore operations.

Virginia, like North Carolina to the south, is believed to host sizeable oil and natural gas reserves off its Atlantic Coast. According to federal estimates, the Mid-Atlantic offshore area (also including Maryland and North Carolina) could hold 2.41 billion barrels of oil and more than 24 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Development of those resources could turn Virginia into an energy powerhouse.

Alaska represents a major part of America’s energy past, present and future. North Slope oil production – accounting for more than 95 percent of Alaska’s overall output – and the Trans-Alaska Pipeline that connects the oil fields with Valdez in the south were and are critically important to our country’s energy security. To ensure America’s future energy security, it’s imperative that Arctic oil and natural gas production in the Chukchi and Beaufort seas off Alaska’s northern coast be included in the United States’ strategic energy planning.

Politicians’ issue positions are scribbled in sand, not granite, right? But here’s one that shouldn’t shift one bit – whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, an Independent or whatever: support for domestic natural gas and the hydraulic fracturing that’s producing record volumes of it. Thanks to fracked natural gas the United States leads the world in reducing carbon emissions, we're more energy secure and consumers are benefiting. No issue is more bipartisan than American-made energy – the natural gas and oil that primarily fuel our economy and our modern lifestyles, brought to us all by safe, responsible fracking.
