Looking for information about hydraulic fracturing? The Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC) and the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC) launched their new joint website today to respond to concerns about the chemicals used in fracturing operations. It's called FracFocus and can be found here.

On Monday, Feb. 28th, we told you about our concerns over The New York Times articles on natural gas drilling and drinking water. As you might recall, the Times criticized the handling and disposal of drilling waste water, implying that natural gas operations might be harming water supplies in several Northeastern cities. The Times offered no solid facts to back up its assertions.

The U.S. Justice Department filed suit against BP and eight other companies yesterday to recover billions of dollars from the Deepwater Horizon tragedy. The administration's suit asks that the companies be held responsible for all cleanup costs and damage to natural resources.

API has announced that it supports the voluntary chemical disclosure registry being developed by the Ground Water Protection Council (GWPC) with the endorsement of the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC). The registry is a step toward providing information about the chemicals in hydraulic fracturing fluids while protecting drilling companies' intellectual property.

Pennsylvania appears to be having a knee-jerk reaction to a commonly-used process to produce natural gas from shale rock formations. In the past few days, the outgoing governor has imposed a ban on all new natural gas drilling on public lands, and Pittsburgh's City Council has passed a bill to ban drilling within the city limits.
