A group of 17 trade associations representing mining, chemicals, energy, manufacturing and business are asking key Democrats on the Senate Appropriations Committee as well as Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) and Senate Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) to support an initiative to stop or delay the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) proposed greenhouse gas (GHG) emission rules. Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat from Louisiana, has taken the unusual step of blocking the confirmation of a Democratic administration's appointee. She says she will not allow a vote on Jack Lew, President Obama's choice for OMB director, until the offshore drilling moratorium is lifted.

The latest report released yesterday is authored by LSU professor Dr. Joseph Mason who finds that the Gulf region will lose more than 19,500 jobs, $5 billion in economic activity and nearly $240 million in state and local tax revenues during the six-month moratorium.

A fire on an offshore platform in the Gulf of Mexico created a media furor yesterday. High seas have forced BP to postpone efforts to remove the containment cap on the Macondo well. The company says engineers are standing by, waiting to remove the cap and the battered blowout preventer (BOP) before replacing the BOP with one from the Deepwater Driller II. No oil is expected to be spilled during the operation.
