The engineers working on the Macondo well in the Gulf have abandoned the top kill procedure. Late yesterday afternoon, BP's Chief Operating Officer Doug Suttles announced that the top kill and the junk shot did not plug the leaking well, so they are moving to the next option--the low marine riser package, or LMRP.

Top Kill Underway

BP has received permission to launch the "top kill" procedure on the Macondo well in the Gulf of Mexico. This means engineers can begin pumping heavy drilling fluids into the blowout preventer (BOP) and the wellbore in hopes of stopping the oil leaks.

Not even the Spanish Armada could compete with the number of boats and ships that are responding to the Gulf oil spill today. According to the latest Joint Unified Command report1,100 vessels and 24,000 people (excluding volunteers) are now grappling with the oil spill from the Macondo well.
