Crude oil prices reached a two-year high on Friday. At the end of the trading day, it closed at $89.19 per barrel, up nearly 21 cents a gallon since November 17.

May 2010 gasoline deliveries (an indication of demand) fell 0.4 percent from the same month last year to an average of 9.05 barrels per day. API's Monthly Statistical Report says this was the lowest level for May since 2003.

U.S. refineries produced more gasoline in March --9.3 million barrels a day--than in any month since API began keeping records. Furthermore, March gasoline deliveries (a key measure of gasoline demand) were higher than in any previous March.

The average U.S. retail price for regular gasoline rose by 4.9 cents to $2.751 per gallon for the week ending March 8, according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA). This average price is higher than one year ago when the average pump price was 81 cents lower and crude oil costs were 88.9 cents a gallon lower.

The record cold weather has helped to push up crude oil prices this week. When the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) closed yesterday, the price of oil stood at $82.66 a barrel. Because there are 42 gallons in a barrel of oil, this is equal to $1.97 per gallon.
