North Carolina Petroleum Council: Offshore energy resources key to North Carolina’s economic future and energy self-sufficiency

RALEIGH, February 26, 2018 – North Carolina Executive Director David McGowan pointed to the many economic benefits that offshore energy resources could bring to North Carolina in advance of today’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management public hearing on the Interior Department’s proposed five-year offshore natural gas and oil leasing plan.

“Interior’s offshore leasing proposal is a crucial development for North Carolina’s economic and energy future. Being able to access more energy resources off the coast of our state could create more reliable and affordable energy for North Carolina’s consumers and families,” said McGowan.

“We are continuing to work towards a long-term energy strategy for North Carolina and this is an important first step in analyzing our energy assets in the state, utilizing advanced technologies that the industry has been developing over the last decade. This will allow us to update the thirty-year-old data for helping us determine our energy future.

“Exploring and producing offshore energy could be a turning point for many of our communities, as we could see an economic catalyst that creates higher paying jobs, increased investments and additional state tax revenue we can use to update our infrastructure, and better our schools. While many are struggling in the more rural areas of our state, this could help bring more affordable energy and better jobs to those in need.

“Additionally, developing our offshore energy resources could strengthen our national security and make us more energy self-sufficient during a critical time.”

The North Carolina Petroleum Council is a division of API, which represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Its more than 625 members produce, process, and distribute most of the nation’s energy. The industry also supports 9.8 million U.S. jobs and 8 percent of the U.S. economy. Learn more at www.api.org.
