WASHINGTON, September 24, 2020 – The American Petroleum Institute (API) released the following statement ahead of the expected House passage today of H.R. 4447, the Clean Economy Jobs and Innovation Act.

“This is a missed opportunity to advance bipartisan solutions to address the real risks of climate change and ensure long-term availability of affordable, reliable and cleaner American energy,” API Senior Vice President of Policy, Economics and Regulatory Affairs Frank Macchiarola said. “There was a chance to pass a bill that took an important step forward in promoting carbon capture technology, and yet here we are taking two steps backwards with provisions that hurt consumers in the middle of a global pandemic. A serious effort to tackle energy and climate challenges would focus on making measurable progress rather than ramming through a 900-page bill that dramatically redefines the nation’s regulatory system without any hearings or time for debate through regular order.”

API recently joined over 70 organizations and companies in signing onto a letter to Senate leadership expressing support for the bipartisan American Energy Innovation Act, which was introduced by Senators Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, and Joe Manchin, D-W.Va.

API represents all segments of America’s oil and natural gas industry. Our more than 600 members produce, process and distribute most of the nation’s energy. The industry supports more than ten million U.S. jobs and is backed by a growing grassroots movement of millions of Americans. API was formed in 1919 as a standards-setting organization. In our first 100 years, API has developed more than 700 standards to enhance operational and environmental safety, efficiency and sustainability.
