2018 Conference Program

Protecting Energy Through Cybersecurity

Join us at the 13th Annual API Cybersecurity Conference & Expo and discover methods for thwarting the bad guys, what the scene looks like over the horizon and how the latest technologies can help you counter cyber espionage, address cyber warfare, and make your cyber efforts secure.

Cybersecurity is critical to the infrastructure of the oil and natural gas industry. The energy industry, including oil and natural gas, is ranked 2nd highest of all industries most likely to suffer a cyber attack. This conference is organized by API to provide an opportunity to network with cybersecurity professionals, and to candidly discuss challenges and share solutions. These sessions, essential to cybersecurity, are chosen and presented by recognized experts in the field.

Industrial Control Systems Workshop

Presented by:

Set in a fully virtualized industrial control system environment complete with human-machine interfaces and programmable logic controllers - HMIs and PLCs, respectively - this workshop focuses on how to use next-generation firewalls and advanced endpoint protection to increase visibility, enforce granular segmentation, and prevent successful cyber-attacks on ICS/SCADA networks and endpoints.

Participants will complete ICS-specific lab exercises teaching them:

  • Techniques for implementing zoning and segmentation per IEC 62443 standard
  • Visibility and control for industrial protocols, such as Modbus and DNP3
  • Create custom application identifiers for ICS and SCADA specific applications and protocols
  • How to implement least privilege access control based on user identity
  • How to use threat prevention capabilities in the next-generation firewall and advanced endpoint client to protect automation servers and HMIs

Hardware Requirements:

Participants must bring a laptop with an HTML5-compatible browser.

Workshop Schedule

November 5, 2018

7:30 am - 8:00 am Registration
8:00 am - 12:00 pm Industrial Control Systems Workshop
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm Lunch

Presented by:

Symantec’s Cyber Security Exercises (CSEs) are technical training that simulates the latest threats and attack vectors on various industry verticals, ranging in difficulty, in a controlled, virtualized environment.

Participants will engage in a hands-on capture-the-flag training competition that casts them as attackers vying to achieve devious ends faster than others to earn recognition and win prizes. Actions will be ranked in real time, with displayed results continuously updated. Your team will experience attacker motives and tactics, and learn to mimic the adversarial methodologies in a controlled environment so realistic it’s indistinguishable from a real siege.

A CSE will challenge participant’s practical security knowledge, and provide training and participant progress reports for benchmarking and comparative metrics.  Symantec’s CSEs can be used for any organization that wants to identify new talent, build stronger security teams from within, and successfully use scenario-based cyber training to develop the skills of their most valuable assets, their people.

Hardware Requirements:
  • Laptop with WIFI and charger

Avoid Housing Scams

Note: API has not contracted with any third party for hotel arrangements and will not call or email you directly to make housing arrangements on your behalf.

Should you receive a call or email from a third-party provider, please collect as much information as you can and let us know immediately. “Room Poachers” have been known to act as representatives of API, or authorized providers of API, to offer room discounts or alternative accommodations to our attendees – often to the attendee’s detriment. These companies are not affiliated with API, and reservations made through these companies for our meeting cannot be guaranteed.

How It Works

This deceptive practice (called “room poaching”) is carried out by third‐party companies that act as travel agencies, wholesalers, or even API to solicit registrants for room reservations. The poacher might inform registrants that the hotel room block is “sold out,” and that if you do not book with them immediately, you may not get a room. Room poachers make it more difficult for us to meet our room block commitments, and expose us to penalties and increased room rates for our events. Room poachers often don’t deliver on promises to customers. When customers arrive, reservations are non‐existent or the hotels are not conveniently located. Sometimes the rooms have been cancelled and hefty cancellation fees have been placed on the customer’s credit card.

Don’t Be Deceived

If you are contacted by anyone asking if you need a room for the API Conference, please get as much information as you can (their name, company name, phone number, etc.) and pass it along to Always make your room reservation directly with the information provided by API or a trusted source.

API will use all legal means possible to prevent these groups from operating.

Please contact with any questions.
