2021 Pipeline SMS Workshop

API Virtual Event

Overview

Preliminary Agenda

As an industry responsible for delivering energy throughout the nation, measures need to be taken to ensure all is done to protect communities and the environment with safe pipeline operations. For this reason, the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recommended the Industry develop guidance for safety management systems for energy pipeline operations. Safety management systems (SMS) have proven to help other industries, such as aviation, nuclear power, and chemical manufacturing. Pipeline operators, through the American Petroleum Institute (API) and in partnership with the U.S. Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), state pipeline regulators, and other interested stakeholders, developed the first edition of API RP 1173 to bring the benefits of SMS to pipeline operations in 2015.

As pipeline operators all over North America embark on and continue to mature in their SMS journey, there have been recognized challenges operators have had to overcome and successes that have been instrumental in safety performance and culture improvements. In 2020 the API Pipeline SMS Workshop focused on the importance of sharing real-world practices and implementation approaches. On October 19, 2021 the 2021 API Pipeline SMS Virtual Workshop, attendees will learn about opportunities to increase their PSMS/SMS through operators and contractor’s experiences in implementing their own PSMS/SMS. Attendees will hear from operators and contractors speaking on such topics as overcoming implementation barriers, identification Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), stakeholder engagement, strategies to support zero incidents, safety culture to close the zero incident gap, communicating expectations to contractors. The program will also feature Captain John M. Cox, FRAeS, MBA Chief Executive Officer of Safety Operating Systems as the Keynote speaker.

We look forward to having you join us virtually at the 2021 Pipeline SMS Workshop as we drive to zero incidents as one Industry – one goal.
