At the heart of many effective community partnerships are the individual efforts and time that company employees give as volunteers in community service. Community clean-up projects and environmental conservation programs offer many different opportunities for volunteer projects. Many companies support volunteer projects such as repainting or refurbishing homes in the community for those who are having difficulty in maintaining their homes. For example, the Shell Employees and Retirees Volunteer Effort (SERVE) founded in 1975, matches employees, retirees and their family members with volunteer opportunities that best utilize their available time, talents and energy. As examples of environmental conservation, Shell is one of the largest worldwide participants in The Ocean Conservancy’s International Coastal Cleanup, which works in conjunction with the Texas General Land Office’s Adopt-a-Beach program to remove trash from beaches while also collecting valuable information on the amount and type of debris. Thousands of ChevronTexaco employees have volunteered for over a decade to restore Yosemite National park’s oak woodlands, meadows and lakes.

In 2001, the ConocoPhillips Humber refinery’s relationship with the neighboring community was tested when an explosion and fire in the saturate gas plant caused damage to area homes. Although the plant was quickly and safely shut down and no major injuries resulted, relationships with the local community were seriously affected. As a result of the incident, a community liaison team was formed to help residents repair property damage and to reassure them of the refinery’s commitment to safety.
