Addressing Public Concerns in Canada

Petro-Canada consults with those who may be affected by its projects and development plans. Public consultation is an ongoing activity at Petro-Canada, with an emphasis on building relationships and actively seeking public input.

The public hearing into Petro-Canada's MacKay River in situ oil sands project near Fort McMurray was the culmination of several years of intensive work by our team to identify public concerns about the development and resolve those issues before the application went to the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board for decision.

In the three years leading up to the hearing, more than 600 consultations were held with potentially affected stakeholders, including aboriginal communities and environmental organizations. The result was a successful process that saw a shortened hearing schedule, timely approval and a commitment to continue to work to resolve any outstanding issues.
