API Cites Colonial for Distinguished Safety & Environmental Performance

Colonial Pipeline received in 2003 the pipeline industry’s most distinguished honor for safety, environmental protection and community outreach during the American Pipeline Institute’s annual gathering of the nation’s pipelines.

The Distinguished Safety and Environmental Performance Award, Colonial’s fourth in as many years, comes amid marked improvement by the pipeline industry in safety and environmental protection. Both the number and volume of pipeline spills hit 35-year lows in 2003, federal statistics show. Colonial Pipeline credits new regulations set forth in the Pipeline Safety Improvement Act of 2002 with improving the industry’s performance. This trend has benefited not only the American consumer but has given the communities where pipelines are located a stronger assurance of safety.

The company also acknowledges industry groups like the American Petroleum Institute and the Association of Oil Pipelines for sharing new ideas and strategies that improved the safety of all pipelines. Colonial also benefited from benchmarking with fellow pipeline companies in 2003.
