Learning About Whales

A small Western Gray Whale population inhabits the area off the northeast coast of Sakhalin Island in Russia during the summer and fall months.

Since 1997, the Sakhalin-1 Consortium has spent about $4 million on research programs to mitigate any operational impact on the whales. This research involves prominent Russian and Western whale scientists and has expanded the knowledge base of the species.
