Chevron's (former Unocal) Geothermal Indonesia and the Unocal Foundation are involved with local researchers, community groups, and Wildlife Trust to conduct research and education and promote sustainable small enterprises and local farmers and villagers based on the rich biodiversity in the Gunung Salak Nature Reserve in Indonesia. One of the species at risk is a large beetle, which provided the inspiration for the effort.
As the project unfolds, attention will be given to community ideas and several possible micro-enterprises based on sustainable use and protection of forest resources. These efforts will also seek to identify markets that the local communities can link to effectively with the products of these micro-enterprises. Education activities with school children will foster conservation awareness and long-term benefits of preserving these rich natural resources. Former Unocal Geothermal employees are active participants in this effort.
