Murphy Oil has developed partnership to promote best practices and enhanced environmental protection for the future. Six programs exemplify Murphy’s leadership.
- In Ecuador, for example, Murphy and its partners developed an Environmental Management Plan and state-of-the-art technology to protect a unique and fragile rain forest ecosystem, minimizing the impact of the facility during construction and operation.
- Murphy’s exploration and production teams have joined the EPA in its Natural Gas Star Program to promote the best management practices of the program and to work toward the development of new, cost-effective options for further reducing emissions.
- Since 1997, Murphy has cooperated with Louisiana State University (LSU) in an ongoing project that has significant potential to enhance our understanding of the ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico. They are conducting the most complete and accurate survey ever done of the aquatic life inhabiting the surrounding water. With this data, scientists have been able to evaluate the positive impact platforms have had on species diversity and fish populations in the Gulf.
- In November of 2000, Murphy reached agreement with TransAlta of Alberta, Canada for the purchase of CO2 emissions reduction credits. The agreement allows Murphy to make progress toward CO2 emissions reduction goals while serving the needs of our customers.
Murphy is an active partner in the voluntary Safety and Environmental Management Program (SEMP) which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Interior’s Minerals Management Service. Murphy has integrated the principals of the SEMP program into all phases of its exploration and production activities to achieve comprehensive environmental and safety protection.
During 2000, Murphy became one of eight pioneer partners in the National Petrochemical and Refiners Association’s Responsible Care® Program. The Responsible Care® Partnership establishes and evaluates procedures to improve the health, safety and environmental performance of participating companies and promotes ongoing interaction with the public that is responsive to community concerns.
Murphy joined the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers’ (CAPP) Environmental, Health and Safety Stewardship Program as an active partner. The program embraces the concept of responsible management and development of the country’s hydrocarbon resources. It is supported by 64 companies that comprise close to 90 percent of Canada’s production.
