Shell is one of the largest worldwide participants in The Ocean Conservancy's International Coastal Cleanup. More than 800 Shell and Motiva Enterprise employees, retirees, family members and friends led an effort to clean up San Luis Pass in Galveston on Saturday, September 21, 2002.
Working in conjunction with The Texas General Land Office's Adopt-a-Beach program, The Ocean Conservancy's objective is to remove trash from beaches while also collecting valuable information on the amount and type of debris.
According to The Ocean Conservancy, most of the debris found during the 2001 Cleanup came from land-based sources, such as beach picnics, inappropriate or illegal dumping, and general littering.
In addition to the Galveston cleanup effort, more than 1,300 volunteers from Shell Oil and its affiliates spearheaded similar beach revitalization efforts in South Padre, Texas; California; Louisiana; and Michigan.
