Recognition for Cupid (Clean-Up and Prevention of Illegal Dumping)

The ongoing community-wide effort to clear illegally dumped household trash from the San Juan Basin has earned the 2004 Environmental Stewardship Award from the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC).

The project beat out 400 others to earn this award, which was accepted by BR’s Gracia Montoya at the commission’s annual meeting in Oklahoma City during October. Montoya helped originate the project and serves as its co-chair. “This is your award,” she told a meeting of BR’s contractors at division headquarters in mid-November, and said the award would circulate among the many companies that contributed volunteers and equipment to the effort.

The CUPID project was sponsored by much of the local energy community, in particular the San Juan Division, which contributed 90 BR volunteers. To date the project has held several major clean-up days, collecting hundreds of tons of trash.

The commission is comprised of governors from 37 U.S. states that have oil and natural gas production, along with representatives from five federal environmental, health and safety agencies and seven international affiliates.
