The availability of educational materials for teachers and students is becoming increasingly important in all parts of the world, but especially in the developing world where access to educational materials is a critical link in achieving economic and social improvements. In Indonesia for examples, Chevron-donated equipment and software are helping to enrich computer knowledge among students in Riau, an oil-producing and natural resources-rich province on the island of Sumatra. The Computer Literacy Improvement program, with the support of local government and other third parties, calls for donating computer laboratories to local secondary schools and universities, including training for computer lab management, operation of hardware and software, and trouble-shooting. API and several of its members are long-time sponsors of Project Learning Tree (PLT), one of the most widely used environmental education programs in the United States and abroad. Over 500,000 educators have been trained to use PLT materials, and more than 25 million students have been reached in the United States, the Trust Territories, Canada, Sweden, Finland, Japan, Brazil and Mexico. Shell launched a technology-donation program, called the Shell Digital Divide Initiative in fall 2001. The Initiative partners with community schools and nonprofit organizations. To date more than 60,000 lives have been touched, more than 3,000 computers have been donated and more than 60 nonprofits and 17 schools have benefited from the project in the U.S. Petro-Canada, in partnership with the Pembina Institute for Appropriate Development, is a founding sponsor of a Web-based educational program.
