BP Solar Donates Solar Equipment for Hometown Earth and Space Science Laboratory

BP Solar has made a donation of 160 solar modules, supporting equipment, and technical expertise to Frederick County Public Schools' (FCPS) new facility for its Earth and Space Science Laboratory (ESSL). The donation is valued at more than $100,000.

Construction of Frederick County Public Schools' new ESSL facility is set to begin this fall. BP Solar's contribution of 160 solar modules amounts to about 26 kilowatts of alternative, pollution-free power - roughly the equivalent to the electrical needs of five average-size homes. BP Solar will provide technical support to ensure the system is connected properly and operates efficiently. On days when the ESSL solar system generates more power than it consumes, the electric meter runs backwards, allowing the facility to earn energy credit from Allegheny Power. When construction is complete, the ESSL will serve as a local, working model for solar energy design and application. Over 16,000 students, as well as the Frederick community, will benefit from their commitment to education.

Dr. Linda Burgee, superintendent of FCPS, says, "We are fortunate to live in a community that provides strong support for public education. This unique and significant contribution by BP Solar is an outstanding example of two organizations working together for the benefit of our students and community."

In addition to tying solar energy into the main electrical grid system, FCPS is exploring the possible development of a solar-powered back-up system instead of the traditional gas powered generator. A future display case at the ESSL will house interpretive information that will teach students about solar power the making of a solar panel from raw material to the finished, working product.
