Conservation and Wildlife Habitat (Biodiversity) Protection
Wildlife Habitat Program
Through the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Lands for Learning® (CLL) program, Marathon’s Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Refinery Wildlife Team volunteers have hosted more than 600 school children for natural science and conservation programs at the refinery’s Savage Branch Reserve. The team also has provided off-site outreach programs to more than 800 school children from four local school districts.

Local Community and Career Development Programs
Marathon Employees Assist Communities in Which They Operate
For nearly two decades, Garyville, Louisiana, refinery employees have provided assistance in the development of the Industrial Mechanical Program at the Louisiana Technical College in Reserve, Louisiana. Since 2001, Garyville has sponsored a School to Career Day at the Louisiana Technical College where all 10th grade students in St. John Parish visit the school in order to determine the skills necessary to work in industry. In addition, the refinery works closely with the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality, hosting an annual refinery operations training for new agency engineers.

National Coalitions and Programs for Teachers
Marathon Facilities Participate in Local Initiatives to Bridge the Gap between Business and Education
Experts on a variety of subjects, including engineering, environmental management and safety, Marathon employees frequently visit the local schools in their communities. During these visits, employees teach students about the petroleum industry and the important functions the company provides to the community. Students often are invited to tour the facility to see operations first hand.

Partnering with Local Fire Protection Agencies
At Marathon's refineries, the on-site fire department trains with local fire departments that might be called to assist if a fire occurs. Marathon emphasizes fire-fighting training through employee attendance at industry-recognized facilities, such as Texas A&M. The refineries also sponsor local firefighter attendance at this training.

Wildlife Habitat Education Programs
Through the Wildlife Habitat Council’s Corporate Lands for Learning® (CLL) program, Marathon’s Catlettsburg, Kentucky, Refinery Wildlife Team volunteers have hosted more than 600 school children for natural science and conservation programs at the refinery’s Savage Branch Reserve. The team has provided tours and programs for various professional organizations and facilitated a community service project for an Eagle Scout candidate. The CLL program provides students with a hands-on opportunity to study the forest and aquatic ecosystems. Activities include studying the taxonomy and life cycles; songbird nest box monitoring; and learning about the changing seasons and how those changes affect the Reserve’s plants and animals.

In 1999, Marathon was one of the first companies to become a pioneer company in the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association Responsible Care® Partnership Initiative, which focuses on improvement through implementation of key HES practices.

New! Marathon and Partners Work to Control Malaria in Equatorial Guinea
Marathon continues to work with the Government of Equatorial Guinea, Marathon, Noble Energy GEPetrol and SONAGAS on a successful Bioko Island Malaria Control Project (BIMCP) in Equatorial Guinea. The innovative private-public partnership has committed to investing an additional $28 million to continue its malaria control initiative through 2013.
