North Carolina Senate takes right step for state’s energy future

WASHINGTON, June 6, 2012 – API’s Executive Vice President Marty Durbin applauded the North Carolina Senate for passing legislation today that would open the door for use of hydraulic fracturing in developing the state’s natural gas resources. According to a recent U.S. Geological Survey assessment, this natural gas could provide years of supply for North Carolina families and the state’s economy:

“We strongly commend the senate’s action today. The legislation provides hope for many new high-paying jobs and a better energy future for North Carolina. Safe and responsible development of the state’s natural gas resources will not only revitalize its economy, it will generate millions of dollars of added government revenue for critical programs.

“Our nation has entered a new era of technologically advanced domestic energy development that will make our nation more secure and more prosperous. The senate vote today brings North Carolina an important step closer to being part of this new energy future and enjoying the many benefits it will bring.”

recent poll of likely North Carolina voters found that 92% of those voters agree that developing more U.S. oil and natural gas could lead to more American jobs, help reduce consumer energy costs (82%), deliver more revenue to the government (73 percent), and increase the nation’s energy security (86 percent).

API represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America’s energy, supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested over $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.
