API: North American energy self sufficiency is achievable

WASHINGTON, September 13, 2012 ─ The American Energy Initiative hearing in the House Energy and Commerce Committee reinforces a central message of our year long Vote 4 Energy campaign ─ that North American energy self sufficiency is achievable.

“We are an energy-rich nation,” said API Executive Vice President Marty Durbin. “We have more oil and natural gas than anyone thought possible even 5 years ago: more potential energy than many oil-exporting nations in the Mideast, and more than most countries in the world.

“If we are allowed to safely produce more of our domestic energy resources and invest in more Canadian oils sands we could provide 100 percent of our U.S. liquid fuel needs in a matter of years,” said Durbin. “We need leadership. We have an opportunity to spur millions of jobs and billions of dollars of revenue to our government. We need smart public policies to develop these vast and critical resources now.”

API represents more than 500 oil and natural gas companies, leaders of a technology-driven industry that supplies most of America's energy, supports 9.2 million U.S. jobs and 7.7 percent of the U.S. economy, delivers more than $86 million a day in revenue to our government, and, since 2000, has invested more than $2 trillion in U.S. capital projects to advance all forms of energy, including alternatives.
