Utilizing Intelligence to Secure People, Operations and Assets

Oil and natural gas industry operations span the globe in the exploration, production and distribution of vital energy resources. These resources can be located in areas with varying levels of infrastructure, government authority, and security for the general population, as well as industry workers and operations. These complicated environments require additional responsibilities and procedures by the industry to ensure their operations and personnel are safe and secure. Understanding how information and intelligence is collected, assessed, and applied is fundamental to developing and maintaining robust situational awareness. While intelligence collection and use is traditionally considered an inherently governmental function, companies that operate in environments where the safety of workers and operations are vulnerable to security related externalities have a responsibility to utilize the information and intelligence available to them to guide their actions. The API Guidance document, Utilizing Intelligence to Secure People, Operations and Assets, describes some of the resources that are available to the industry to help attain situational awareness in different operating environments.

Achieving Energy Security in an Interdependent World

Oil is essential to fuel economic growth. But its supply is volatile, subject to short-term interruptions as well as longer-term lapses in the rate of supply development. As a consequence, any lapses carry with them substantial economic costs and give rise to concern over “oil security.” More...

Industry Security Guidance

Since September 11, 2001, API and its member companies have been working hard to protect oil and natural gas facilities around the world from the possibility of terrorist attack. API has published API Recommended Practice 70, Security for Offshore Oil and Natural Gas Operations which provides guidelines for managers of offshore facilities to evaluate their unique security vulnerabilities, and Pipeline SCADA Security, standards for monitoring oil pipelines. Both are available through API’s online publications catalog.
