Fact Sheet: Importance of a Strong Domestic Refining Industry

The US refining industry is strategically important but faces many challenges that could have unintended implications for the country. With 148 refineries and total operable capacity of 17.6 MBD, US refineries are configured to optimally process medium-heavy, medium sour crude oils and produce high quality fuels, petrochemical feedstocks and other products adding significant economic value for our nation. More than 50 companies own and operate US refineries. With almost 50% of capacity located in PADD III (Gulf), it is the world’s largest refining center and one of the most “complex” (technologically advanced) so the US refining industry is best equipped to maximize production of higher value light products (e.g., gasoline, diesel).
