ICP EXAMINATIONS

SCHEDULE YOUR CBT EXAM

Most ICP certification exams are administered via computer-based testing (CBT) and are held within multiple-day testing windows throughout the year. Exceptions to computer-based exams are:

  • Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners performance demonstration exams
  • Special site paper-based tests (PBT)

Scheduling a Computer Based Test (CBT)

  1. After your application is approved you will receive an Exam Authorization email from API, with an Eligibility ID and instructions on how to schedule your exam with Prometric.
  2. It is mandatory that you schedule your exam on the Prometric website. There you will have the ability to:
    • Schedule your exam location, date and time
    • Confirm your test appointment details
    • Reschedule within the same testing window, or cancel a scheduled exam appointment
  3. Contact API immediately if the name on your Exam Authorization email does not match your government-issued ID that you will bring to the exam.
  4. Seating at computer testing centers is limited and is on a first-come-first-served basis. Therefore, API does not guarantee that you will obtain a seat at a specific location or on a specific day within a testing window. Schedule your exam as soon as possible for the best chance of receiving your preferred location and time.
  5. If you fail to schedule your exam within your assigned testing window, you will need to submit another application in the ICP Portal for a new testing window. Additional fees apply.

Rescheduling / Canceling a CBT Exam

Within the parameters listed below, you may cancel an exam appointment (view the refund policy on the Policies page), or reschedule an exam appointment in the same testing window on the Prometric website.

  1. You may reschedule your exam within the same testing window at no cost if you do so 30 days or more before your currently scheduled exam appointment.
  2. Rescheduling or canceling with Prometric between 5 and 29 days before your scheduled exam appointment will incur a $70 fee, payable directly to Prometric.
  3. You may not reschedule or cancel your exam less than five (5) days before your scheduled exam appointment.
  4. After your exam is scheduled with Prometric, you may not change your exam to a new testing window. You will need to submit another application in the ICP Portal. Additional fees apply.

Candidates may cancel an application and exam appointment with API under certain conditions, and may be eligible for a partial refund. Refer to Policies.

What to Expect on your CBT Exam Day

  1. Test Center Regulations – Includes ID requirements, what to bring to the testing center, and what is expected of candidates.
  2. Papers and reference books are not allowed in computer testing centers.
  3. There will be a brief tutorial on the computer-based testing experience before the examination begins. Review the tutorial for your program before exam day.
  4. You will have access to a calculator, scratch paper and pencil.
  5. Prometric testing centers feature superb security procedures. To preview the check-in procedures at one of their testing centers, view their YouTube video.
    • Biometric fingerprint screening is required only in the country of India.
  6. ICP provides preliminary score results immediately following most computer-based examinations. Scores are not final until all candidate exam challenges have been reviewed by a committee of subject matter experts and adjustments, if any, are made. This preliminary scoring system will help the majority of candidates determine whether they need to submit a reschedule application and continue with their studying efforts.
    • Preliminary results for the 510, 570, 653, 1169 and TES examinations have three levels:
      • Preliminary Pass
      • Marginal (score too close to call)
      • Preliminary Fail
    • All other exams have either a Preliminary Pass or a Preliminary Fail result.
  7. Candidates will not be certified until final exam results are released. Final results will be emailed from Prometric 6-8 weeks following the end of the testing window.
    • A paper certificate and wallet card will be mailed out approximately 2-4 weeks after the results have been released.
    • Print copies of your certificates and wallet cards directly from your API account in the ICP Portal. Select “Certifications” tab along the top of your account and then click on the red links labeled: “Print Certificate” and “Print Wallet Card.”
  1. Exams for the Qualification of Ultrasonic Testing Examiners certification programs are administered using the performance demonstration method and are held in 3-day testing sessions six times a year.
  2. After your application is approved, API will schedule your exam within the testing session that you have chosen and notify you via email with the exam details.
  3. API reserves the right to cancel or reduce the number of days in any testing session based on the number of applications received.
  4. Space for performance demonstration exams is limited and is on a first-come-first-served basis, so don’t delay in submitting your application.
  5. Test results will be emailed from API approximately 4-6 weeks after your exam date.

  2. Papers and reference materials are only allowed into API 510, 570 and 653 exams, and only during the open-book portions of the exams.

Requesting a Special Site PBT

  1. A minimum of 12 applicants is required, and a special site fee may be charged.
  2. Special site paper-based tests need to be coordinated by a group administrator. This administrator will be the liaison between API and their group’s candidates.
  3. The group administrator is responsible for following the policies set forth by API. Please review the requirements and fees before requesting a special site exam.

  4. A special site may also be requested for groups that require an examination to be administered in a language other than English. If the exam has not already been translated, API may be able to accommodate.

Send all inquiries concerning special site examinations to the ICP Exam Coordinator.
