WASHINGTON, September 10, 2026 — The American Petroleum Institute (API) today announced the publication of the third edition of API Specification Q2 (API Spec Q2), Quality Management System Requirements for Service Supply Organizations for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries.
This specification provides a quality management system (QMS) framework for organizations performing well-site services associated with well construction, intervention, production and abandonment, by establishing the minimum requirements for developing a QMS for upstream service supply organizations.
The second edition of API Recommended Practice 1176 (API RP 1176), Assessment and Management of Cracking in Pipelines has been published. The updated standard gives pipeline operators a comprehensive framework for managing cracking-related threats and reducing the risk of pipeline failure.

API has published the 4th edition of API Recommended Practice (RP) 754, Process Safety Performance Indicators for the Refining and Petrochemical Industries. The update provides a consistent framework to help companies track process safety performance, identify warning signs and contribute to the reduction of risk for major incidents, such as hazardous material releases, fires or explosions.

Originally published in 1924 as API’s first standard, API Spec 5L has supported the safe and reliable manufacture of steel line pipe used to transport oil and gas for more than a century. The 47th edition includes important new requirements across more than 15 topic areas, including high-frequency weld (HFW) pipe quality and pipe used in CO2 transport.

WASHINGTON, May 5, 2025 — The American Petroleum Institute (API) is pleased to announce the publication of an Addendum to the 11th edition of the API 5CT, Casing and Tubing. The update strengthens the requirements for the manufacture of steel casing and tubing used in oil and gas drilling and production operations, enhancing safety, environmental protection and operational integrity.
In December 2020, American Petroleum Institute (API) published Recommended Practice 1183, First Edition (RP 1183), Assessment and Management of Dents in Pipelines. Since being issued, RP 1183 has been applied by pipeline operating companies and engineering consultants providing services to the energy pipeline industry to evaluate dents and deformations on pipeline systems and to support mitigation and repair decisions. RP 1183 includes various screening tools to estimate the remaining fatigue life of a dent in a pipeline.
