The U.S. Midwest has steadily increased refining capacity and inputs

The U.S. Midwest (PADD 2) has steadily increased refining capacity and inputs over the years. Since 2010, refinery capacity has increased ~500 kb/d (14%) in data through November 2025. Consumption in the region has also increased by ~200 kb/d (4%), but the increase in petroleum product production means the region receives fewer refined products shipped from other regions. Net receipts of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel are down from the nearby regions of the U.S. Gulf Coast (PADD 3) and U.S. East Coast (PADD 1) over the same time. Increased capacity to import crude oil from Canada has contributed to the region’s increased refining activity.
