Opponents of increased domestic oil production like to portray the U.S. as being helpless in the face of worldwide events.  This argument sometimes takes this form:

… with only 2% of the world’s oil reserves, we can’t just drill our way to lower gas prices – not when consume 20% of the world’s oil.

The United States is blessed with an abundance of clean-burning natural gas. It provides fuel for industry, power for heating, and chemicals for plastics, medicines and a wide variety of consumer products, such bicycle helmets and hospital supplies, that make Americans safer, healthier, and more comfortable. At the current rate of consumption, it's estimated that the United States has enough natural gas to last about 100 years.

U.S. oil and natural gas drilling increased markedly in the third quarter this year, according to API's 2010 Quarterly Well Completion Report: Third Quarter. An estimated 11,297 oil wells, natural gas wells and dry holes were completed, which was 45 percent higher than during the same period in 2009.
